Soundtrack

According to the book “Understanding Religion and Popular Culture” it describes what people use to determine whether a song is “christian” music or not. Lyrics of a song determines the genre of it, at which all of these songs were considered “Contemporary Christian Music” CCM (Clark). Lyrics of songs usually have different approaches as we see in these episodes, they use the lyrics not contingent the words “Jesus, God” but rather ‘Him” which can interpreted into anyone. When determining christian music, the focal point is the message it gives listeners “Jesus loves me, Jesus died for me, I love Jesus” or JPM which is the word Jesus per minute.  Lauren Dialge and Switchfoot were artists both used in episodes for the show. Their songs “Look up child" and "Rescue” by Lauren Diagle and “Always” by Switchfoot were used in a non religious focused view.

Lauren Diagle

“Look up Child” and “Rescue” does not contain “God or Jesus” but they do contain “him, you and I” with referring to God as those pronouns. With that, listeners can determine who “him, you and I” are. “Look up child” is about finding that someone to listen and look up to when in need. Lauren, as a christian musical writer, is referring to looking up to God when in need. “Rescue” is also about God helping us but it portrayed through God’s eyes, “I will rescue you”, but when placed in a multi-cultural and show, it can be determined by the listener on how they want to interpret the song.

Switchfoot

“Always” also does not contain the words “God or Jesus” but uses “I” as in speaking through God’s eyes. It explains God showing you your life as he created it and that “every breath is a second chance”. In the episode, that can be seen as a doctors role in keeping a person alive would be “a second chance”.
