April Kepner

April Kepner is a strong Christian women. She relies on God for everything that happens in her life, her ups and downs. April is faced with many struggles throughout the show including her battle with her religion and losing her first child. Her first child, Samuel, was diagnosed with a genetic bone disorder, OI, while in the womb. Herself and her husband, Jackson Avery, were faced with the decision of aborting the child or risking it to see if he would survive birth and future surgeries. Both April and Jackson were raised completely different. April growing up in Iowa by a white, devoted Christian, farming family and Jackson by a single black women who is very successful (Fremont). When married, Jackson supported April’s beliefs but did not believe the same. Samuel’s situation brought the couples beliefs into major conflict, as one was against aborting and the other was not. In the end, they were influenced by Jackson’s mother who recommended to have a baptism for Samuel but to end the pregnancy and not have the child suffer. This plan would then cover part of April’s beliefs with holding a baptism but also moral value in allowing Samuel to no longer suffer in the womb. April’s religious beliefs were tested strongly during this process, but even more so after Samuel was buried. She cried out “This isn’t fair. It just isn’t. I spent my life believing in a God who is just.” Emphasizing in God not working through her prayers and blessing her with a healthy child. Viewers are then shown candles in the hospitals chapel, lit which resembles their friends supporting April’s beliefs along with supporting the baby’s birth, baptism and struggles. April does lose her religion after Samuel but a friend eventually helps her out of the depression and bring God back into her life. Religion can be a form of aid with stress and everyday struggles. In April’s case, she uses God as a shoulder to cry on, instead of seeking it elsewhere, like excessive alcohol (Rosner)
