Season 13 viewers are shown a struggle between Alex Karev and Christian parents. Liam who is a child with a brain tumor, brings himself into the hospital in need of help. Doctors have scans done and see that he has an aggressive brain tumor. Liams parents then find him and the doctors inform them of the tumor. They refuse and sign an A.M.A because they believe that God will heal Liam and leaves. Eventually, Liam comes back to the hospital, but this time he is blind. Karev is faced with respecting their christian beliefs but struggles with his own beliefs in medicine. If Liam does not have this surgery he will die, and he informed the parents of this beforehand. Karev then finds a loophole in the system and claims he does not know Liam and that he is having a seizure, which means Karev is allowed to perform emergency surgery on him. In the end, Liam is saved by Karev by doing the surgery but Liam’s parents want to sue him because he did not respect their beliefs. Lastly, we then learn that Liam’s mother actually dropped him off to the hospital. Showing that the mother and father did not share the same beliefs, secretly going against her husband ended up saving her child’s life. (Stempsey) This shows viewers the dedication Karev has to saving a person's life with working around the system. He did not follow the father's request, but his medical background overpowered the "right thing to do".
